'WELLNESS #8:SLEEP QUALITY- Quality Sleep in which your body rests while your mind gets recharged is important to your wellness helping you wake up with the energy you need for a new day. While you sleep, the brain is active carrying out processes that cannot be performed while you are awake. It is very active in making new nerve connections and dreaming has benefits as well allowing you to work out stress and anxiety. Sleep is a way to recharge your brain in the same way you need to recharge your smartphone so it has the energy to operate. Choose your best sleep time and waking time and stay consistent as you can. Too little or too much sleep can affect your energy and your mood. It is best to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Have a pre-sleep routine: stop eating 3 hours before bed; stop working 2 hours before bed; and turn off all screens 1 hour before sleep. I wear a smartwatch while I sleep and synchronize it with a free app when I wake up to analyze my sleep quality the night before(see slide). The program analyzes how much light sleep (light blue) and deep sleep (purple) I got during the night. Periods where you wake are shown in red and your heart rate while sleeping is also monitored (red dots). The optimum is to get a 15% drop in heart rate while you sleep into the lower part of your normal pulse range during the day.
