'(12 Sep 2014) NEW EXHIBITION LOOKS AT THE HISTORY OF FASHION ILLUSTRATIONS A new exhibition of fashion illustrations opened in London on Thursday (11 SEPT. 2014) to coincide with the start of London Fashion Week. The collection of original fashion drawings span from post-war 1940s right through to the 1970s. There are more than 40 works on display from the likes of Rene Bouche, Rene Gruau and Carl Erickson. \"Every artist who is exhibited here in the exhibition all went to great traditional art schools, they all learned to draw from life, but because they took the turning of going into fashion illustration as opposed to other forms of art, their names were never recognized, \" explains the exhibition\'s curator, Connie Gray. \"Their work was recognized and would be published internationally in Europe in America, all over the world, but their names themselves were never recognized. And I feel that is very important that they now should have the recognition for their work, which is wonderful and exciting and stunning.\" As well as sketches, there are also magazine covers and advertising campaigns to admire. British illustrator May Routh is just one of many artists whose work is on display. Routh worked as an illustrator in the 1960s for publications including Vogue, Elle and Honey. As well as her magazine work, she would also cover fashion shows in Paris, before moving into costume design for films (\"Jesus Christ Superstar,\" \"The Man Who Fell to Earth\" and \"Ronin.\") Routh recalls being one of few women illustrators in the \'60s. \"I think they were mostly men. But when I started there were some women, because the thing is my parents had got The Daily Telegraph and I used to look, that\'s where I saw my first fashion drawings. It was Beryl Hartland, drew in that. So I remember her work, so I always knew she was a woman. I suppose I didn\'t realize that before I knew about other people. So I actually thought that I liked her work and got to meet her later on. I can\'t remember other women actually. Fascinating.\" The exhibition features Routh\'s original illustration of model Sevilla Hercolani. Many of the illustrations in the exhibition come designers, such as Barbara Hulanicki (Biba) and Zandra Rhodes. \"Drawing on Style, Four Decades of Elegance\" runs until 16 September at the Gray M.C.A gallery in London.
