We got a chance to watch the making of a few unique sweets while we were in Sri Lanka. When I say unique, it means something that tasted different from our snacks, but they resembled some of our snacks in their appearance. Aasmi with the sweet layer over it was one sweet that we tasted. Konde kavum (oil cake) was another. Both tasted good. We saw the making of palm jaggery as well. I love sweets. The lady at the shop was skillfully making the sweet called Aasmi. It looked like a round net, and was crispy. When they poured a few strings of thickened palm jaggery syrup over it, it turned yummy! Their oil cake resembled our Neyyappam in looks, but tasted different. I was also given a chance to try a hand at the making of palm jaggery. Well, I was not exactly allowed to make jaggery, but I was allowed to pour the hot jaggery syrup into coconut shells for thickening. I had a wonderful experience with traditional Sri Lankan sweets.
