'When a baby is first born the fingernails are very soft and it can be difficult to separate the skin from the nails.  For this reason, it is recommended that you file the nails or to keep the hands covered to prevent scratching during the first week of life.  Usually in 1-2 weeks, the nails start to separate from the skin of the finger and clipping of the nail is possible.
